Welcome to Episode One!

Meet the members of the COSP; Heather D’Angelo of Carta Fragrances, Mauricio Garcia of Herbcraft Perfumery, Molly Brennan of Sacred Scents, and Sydney Buffman of Syd Botanica.

You are invited into the conversation as they discuss why making perfumery as sustainable as possible is important to them as well as an important shift for the fragrance industry. The team shares a working definition of sustainability and an overview of the episodes to come.

Heather comes to us with the heart and professional background of an ecologist. Her passion for finding “the unicorn” natural material has taken her all over the world and into the amazonian rainforest. This drive and penchant for research has given her an incredible depth and breadth of knowledge in sustainable perfumery.

Mauricio’s love of perfumery and plants has led to applying a lens of sustainability around his fragrance projects, including the replication of the scents of endangered botanicals using synthetics. He is also our resident expert on endangered species commonly used in perfumery and sustainable synthetics.

Molly brings her background in sustainable international development to perfumery, informing her purchasing and creation with a concern for environmental and social impacts. As the only natural perfumer in the group, Molly comes with an open mind that natural does not always mean the most sustainable.

As a designer and an herbalist and someone who loves scent it was a natural next step for Sydney to become a perfumer. Her care for the plants she worked with as an herbalist led to her concern for sustainable practices in perfumery and her expanding interest and knowledge of the social impact of the perfume industry.

From supply chain to packaging, toxicology to colonialism, in future episodes the COSP will be interviewing experts in the industry, asking questions, getting answers, and providing resources.
